Deaconess Billings Clinic

As phase 1 of a 5 phase Master Plan, A&E Architects designed this new inpatient/outpatient surgery unit to accommodate the growing demands of the community and provide better possibilities for physician recruitment and retention.

The new 13,870 s.f. unit houses 10 pre-op/Level II Recovery rooms with in-room private toilet facilities, 4 Level I P.A.R. rooms, a General, General/Ortho, and Class B/Pain Management/Dental Surgery rooms. Each surgical room has fully integrated technology functions and dedicated equipment storage that is easily accessible for the staff to change, depending on the case being prepped and the surgeon’s specialty. Full staff support is provided within the unit, and the staff is provided with natural daylight through strategic skylight placement. A resounding principal of the “healing environment” approach, acoustics were highly considered throughout the project, which included angled surfaces in the OR’s for the reduction of reverberation, sliding ICU-type doors in all recovery areas for patient noise isolation and HIPPA compliance, and intensive measures in the HVAC ductwork to reduce airflow noise.

Ancillary departments affected by the surgery addition were also relocated and enhanced to better serve the new functions. These included an 890 s.f. relocated Physicians’ Lounge, expanded/remodeled 3,230 s.f. Materials Management with truck dock, relocated/expanded 1,000 s.f. Environmental Services, and relocated/expanded 1,540 s.f. Patient Information Services.
